IMPERIAL GOVERNMENT
Form of Government
he kingdom of Old Rectoryland is a constitutional monarchy ruled by a King or Queen with the aid of a single house of parliament (the Althing), in which sit the elected aristocracy and the Colonial Governors. Each member of the nobility has jurisdiction over an administrative area, while Colonial Governors are in charge of their home colony. The Monarch has final veto on all laws and taxes, and can pass both without the consent of the Althing; however the Monarch can be forced to abdicate in favour of the next in line if 75% or more vote in an imperial referendum.
The current monarch, King Dominic I, ascended the throne in January 2006, when his father King Christopher, abdicated in his favour. Although not first in line for the throne, King Dominic ascended the throne through virtue of being the only one of King Chris's sons still living within Old Rectoryland, and actively interested in affairs of state, since Prince Geoffrey had taken up an important position in the English civil service.
The head of the Imperial Althing is the Chairman Governor, who is also known as the Prime Minister. This position has been held by Governor Sir Louis McQuade since 2006.
Elections
t any time, any citizen(s) of Old Rectoryland may challenge a member of the aristocracy for their position, and any citizen of an Old Rectorian colony may challenge their Colonial Governor for the post. In this case, a referendum of all the citizens affected occurs where the candidates are elected by Single Transferable Vote. If the challenger loses the vote, they may not challenge again for at least one year. Otherwise, there is no maximum term a Governor of member of the aristocracy may sit in the Althing. If an elected member of the Althing leaves their post for any reason, they are usually replaced (at least in the short term) by the Monarch's veto.
