MILITARY AFFAIRS
"It is not a field of a few acres of ground, but a cause, that we are defending, and whether we defeat the enemy in one battle, or by degrees, the consequences will be the same." - Thomas Paine
ld Rectoryland's military is small, complicated, and a force to be reckoned with. Most colonies maintain small forces, in addition to the divisions maintained in the main area of Old Rectoryland. Old Rectorian soldiers have, thankfully, yet to engage in full battle; however it is official policy to have them ready, and a small force has been present at the annexation of most new Old Rectorian territory (i.e, extension of the land borders of the kingdom as opposed to extension of colonial status to petitioners).
In addition to the armed forces, Old Rectoryland takes very seriously its Military Intelligence (MI) service, currently under (Governor Bishop) Commander 'Woody' Wood.
MILITARY SERVICE
ld Rectoryland's present military policy owes much to the system pioneered by the Swiss and other enlightened nations. It is best explained by excerpts from the constitution:
(Section Four, Subsection One: 'On The Armed Forces')
CLAUSE 1:
Old Rectoryland shall have an army. This will be partially organised as a militia. The armed forces of Old Rectoryland will be split between an offence force and a defence force. The army will strive to prevent war and promote peace, and protect the citizens and monarch of Old Rectoryland. It shall lend support to civil authorities when they must repel serious threats to internal security or master other exceptional circumstances. The government may provide further tasks.
CLAUSE 2:
The army shall be made up of 20% full time occupational soldiers, 30% territorial armed forces, and 50% National Servicemen.
CLAUSE 3:
Full time occupational soldiers will be employed full time. They will receive the most training, and be on duty as much as possible.
CLAUSE 4:
Territorial armed forces will be paid to be employed part time, voluntarily. They will be required to train as often as possible.
CLAUSE 5:
Every citizen of the Old Rectorian Empire must do military service. This will be a period of intensive training. Every citizen must be prepared to be called up to be part of the military at any time, especially during times of national emergency. Weaponry will be located at Police Station Armouries for such times, protected by permanent armed guard. The government will legislate on fair compensation for loss of income. Should any citizen be injured or lose their life during armed service the state will provide compensation.
The armed forces must swear allegiance to the crown and to the people, and where the two oaths come into conflict allegiance to the people before the crown, and the general peace before the people. In theory this prevents military power being used to tyrannise the people.
DEFENCE POLICY
lthough Old Rectoryland is at heart a peaceful nation, its relative novelty and diminuitive size mean that the commanders of the armed forces have recently taken advantage of our rural setting to encroach upon the neighbouring United Kingdom, who have not missed the small amount of territory taken by force. So far this territorial war has been without casualty or death.
This policy is in line with the constitutional constraints:
(Section Four, Subsection Three: 'On Offense')
CLAUSE 1:
Offense is any action outside the boundaries of Old Rectoryland in order to take land, or to enforce the wishes of the Old Rectorian Government on persons or governments outside Old Rectoryland. The Old Rectorian Offense Force may only leave the boundaries of Old Rectoryland if allowed to do so by a 75% majority in National Referendum, unless the area of land to be taken is unpopulated by humans.
The most recent and controversial additions to Old Rectoryland's main area have been the cities of Wilksby and Moorby. Although the citizens of Moorby seemed relatively satisfied with the turn of events, Wilksby residents were ambivalent and luke-warm about the whole thing, removing securely pinned Government propaganda despite reassurances that it would not be allowed to blow away and cause Litter (as actually did happen in Moorby!).
As a defense force cannot truly be called such when invading or fighting on another nation's territory, the defense and offense forces are kept separate by the constitution. This enables the two sections to specialise, although different forces may aid one another. The constitution also rules that
Defence is hereby defined as the actions of armed forces which shall not pass beyond the boundaries of Old Rectoryland or its Colonies, except in transfer between Colonies or Kingdom. The pre-emptive defensive strategy, or any other means in which the Old Rectorian Armed Forces enter another Nation in order to defend the boundaries of Old Rectoryland or another Nation is unconstitutional. (Section Four, Subsection Two: 'On Defence', Clause 1)
During the King's time at Cambridge University, UK, Old Rectoryland has adopted once again its original defence policy: the army shall not be allowed, under any circumstances, outside the boundaries of Old Rectoryland whilst on duty, and no aggressive moves will be made against other nations for the forseeable future.

DISTRIBUTION OF FORCES

his map shows the rough distribution and influence of the armed forces of Old Rectoryland. There are particular concentrations of troops in major towns where colonial residences are situated, organised as garrisons; most noticeably Horncastle Garrison where Kiberian Catalan, Lindleya, the Commonwealth of 52B, and New New South Wales all maintain an armed presence in addition to the militia of the Horncastle Legion which can be mustered at relatively short notice. The Mounted Police of Millan, as a judicial force and not a military force, may lend aid to the Bardney Area Regiment, but cannot be included in this appraisal.

ANIMALS AND THE ARMY
| he Old Rectorian Ministry for Defence places much importance on the idea that as animals are people and citizens by Old Rectorian Law, they should also enjoy the same obligations as humans, that is, to serve in the Army, where they are often invaluable in transportation and attack roles, being more expendable than humans. To this end, many schemes have been put forward:
A Llama-Mounted Division has been proposed, but the country has so far been unable to locate llamas for this purpose within the Defence Budget's price range.
Several Canine Regiments of attack dogs have been set up, under the competent leadership of selected high-up dogs. Each canine soldier receives the Choya Cross after one year's service, in memory of the first enlisted recruit Misty Hinkins (1990-2002).
A porcine regiment has been planned for some time, and training of the animals as a territorial force (in addition to their primary role as meat animals) is expected to begin when the 400 flame-throwers, grenade launchers, and wireless web-cams have been acquired. They will only be called upon to serve in the event of national emergency.
