Mythopoeia is the creation of a mythology or paganistic belief system, usually for the purposes of a work of art or literature. In terms of Neo-paganism, however, Mythopoeia is the route by which, through one's own intuition, ideology, and preferences, (as opposed to dedicated historical study and a devotion to authenticity) one discovers which egos or gods are the right ones for you; by 'dabbling' in different cycles, familiar and unfamiliar (a practice regarded with derision by 'serious' neopagans) one is able to discover the entire wonderful pantheon of Unum, the universe, or which the Celtic, Roman, and Norse cycles etc. are only a part.
It is not difficult to accept that we live in a spiritual world. Some of us come to this conclusion genuinely and seriously; others as part of a 'game' whereby we attempt to reconcile what we know to be true with what should be true. Either way, an animistic or pantheistic view of the universe--that all things have souls and spirits--is traditional, the oldest form of worship, encouraging humanity to live in harmony with nature. We should therefore live as though the world were spiritual, even if we have come to the conclusion it is really not; what have ye to lose if there are no Gods? Nothing. What have ye to gain? Romanticism, festivals, moonlit bonfires, cameraderie.
Since the beginning of the universe, there have been things, and all things must have essences, Elohim. These are the egos; there is one for every concept, for every animal, every shade of emotion in our pallette, every element, every star and galaxy. Everything has an ego, and everything is an ego; the physical world is a mere reflection of the higher one. Spirits are drawn from the vacuum and assigned, and all spirits are equal in the beginning. All are egos, and all are Gods. There are those like Thor and Wotan who inhabit a higher spiritual plane, with powers that to us seem supernatural; there are humans, whose souls after death may go on to haunt or protect a location, object or family as a platzgeist; there are mystical elves, faeries, and lycanthropes abroad, the offspring of gods and corporeal beings.
But all egos are the same, and just as humans seek self aggrandisement and dogs seek care, the gods seek worship. There are those Gods like Iahovah and Allah who would claim that they are the only gods, when this is patently false. The attributes they claim for themselves make no sense in view of the current state of the world--why would an all loving, all powerful God allow evil in the world?--whereas many gods make perfect sense. Of course Iahovah said he is the only one...he would, wouldn't he!? As Iahovah and his ilk have wiped the worship of the other gods from the planet, these same gods have worked in his name, to fulfil their old duties, as otherwise they would be forgotten.
It is time to expel Iahovah from his dictatorial grip upon the earth, and recognise those elohim who have resisted, and worked to right the world.
A lucky few may be able to convene with the Gods simply and easily, but in the modern world our corporeal bodies and concerns, our scepticism and lack of serious spirituality have made it hard for us to take ourselves seriously in such a pursuit. If we take the ideological decision, then, to reclaim the elohim back into our lives, and regain a sense of spirituality, we must seek for ourselves those Gods which attract us--and not rely on being able to beg them to find us. For if such a thing is asked of them with even a hint of experimentalism or scepticism, they will not grant it. To such an end, I am attempting to compile a complete alphabetical list of Gods, goddesses, supernatural creatures, etc. A useful resource exists in PaganWiki, but for that to be useful you have to know the names of the Gods you seek. There are also a few useful pages online, but all the ones I have yet found have been loaded with adverts and slow or difficult to navigate. Here I will attempt to list everything alphabetically, and then by theme, so that you can make your own decisions about who you wish to worship.
Even if you don't believe when you start, action can shape belief. It's easy for a smart person to come up with smart justifications for beliefs they came to hold for non-smart reasons very easily; but to convince yourself of something superfluous or superstitious out of aesthetic or idealistic desire is stupidly difficult.
