DAY 1

June 7th, 2007

Today is day one of the no-sleepover project. I enjoyed my sleep last night, despite not knowing whether it would in fact be my last, since I knew there was a 50/50 chance I wouldn't get any more until Monday. I didn't get up until about 11 o'clock, yet I still feel very very tired.

There is a lot of building work going on at my house this morning for some reason, so the first thing I did was liberate the precious caffeine-filled drinks from the fridge in the utility room, which is now lacking a section of wall. I am conserving it for my moment of direst need, though, so I put it in the little fridge in the kitchen and poured my self a big glass of tooth-rotting smoooth fresh orange instead, guaranteed to wake up the mouth.

To get started with this little experiment, I needed to do some research, and plan (yeah, I know I left it a little late) exactly how I'm going to record results. A graph seems like a nice idea.

According to Wikipedia, although "The National Sleep Foundation maintains that eight to nine hours of sleep for adult humans is optimal", the longest anyone has intentionally gone without sleep is 11 days. I doubt I can beat that, but we'll see how I'm holding out by monday, huh? Wikipedia also gives me some ideas for what I can measure over the no-sleeping period: "sleep benefits alertness, memory and problem solving, overall health, as well as reducing the risk of accidents". Therefore, my 'mental effects' graph will look like this:

and my 'noticable effects' graph will look like this:

So far, as you can see, I measure relatively normal on the graphs, although I am quite tired this morning, as noted already.

I will keep you updated.
